Collection: GOING TO THE FISH MARKET - PINCHY X MIA UMEKO

A COLLAB WITH PINCHY PRODUCTS.

WHEN MADDIE AND I WERE DREAMING UP THIS COLLABORATION, A LINE OF SATURATED SEA CREATURES WAS A NO-BRAINER. FOOD-ADJACENT WAS THE STARTING POINT, A CREATIVE POWERHOUSE IN THE KITCHEN AND AN ALWAYS HUNGRY, ARTIST FOUND THEIR COMMON GROUND IN BOLD DESIGN, COLOUR AND GOOD FOOD. PINCHY STAYS TRUE TO THE JOYFUL EXPRESSION IN DECOR AND WE WANTED TO MIRROR THIS IN OUR COLLECTION.
RETROSPECTIVELY, THE IMAGERY AND ICONOGRAPHY OF SEAFOOD ADVERTISING WAS A KEY PLAYER IN THE FORMATIVE YEARS OF MY LIFE. MY MUM HAILS FROM COASTAL JAPAN AND RAISED ME NEAR LONDON’S ICONIC PORTOBELLO ROAD. MANY WEEKENDS WERE SPENT AT THE MARKETS PERUSING THE OFFERS OF THE COMMUNITY. I VIVIDLY REMEMBER LIVE CRABS BEING SOLD BY A FISHMONGER AT THE CORNER OF MY STREET, AND THIS SERIES OF WORK CALLS ON THESE MEMORIES. AT HOME, MODEST JAPANESE SEAFOOD DISHES WERE A STAPLE.
THE PULL OF THE OCEAN CONTINUED TO WEAVE ITS WAY INTO MY LIFE WHEN I MOVED TO AUSTRALIA, NOW LIVING BEACHSIDE. AUSTRALIA’S VIBRANT SEAFOOD CULTURE HAS SERVED AS A SOURCE OF INSPIRATION FOR THIS DROP, COMBINING IMAGERY OF MARKETS IN MY CHILDHOOD WITH ICONIC AUSTRALIAN SEAFOOD. OH, AND I’M A PISCES.
